Are the Sense products oil-free?

Some of the Sense products do contain certain oils because of their emollient and moisturizing properties. However, all of the Sense products are non-comedogenic (meaning they won't clog pores).

What is the percentage of Alpha Hydroxy Acids in the Sense Products?

Both the Serum Intensive and Firming Body Nourisher contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA). These products comply with strict guidelines established by the FDA regarding safety and efficacy of Alpha Hydroxy Acid products. The FDA guidelines state that any skin care product available for retail sale must have an AHA concentration of 10 percent or less and a pH of 3.5 or greater. Sense's Serum Intensive and Firming Body Lotion both fall within those guidelines, with an AHA concentration of between 5-10% and a pH of approximately 4.0.

Both products are safe for everyday use.

What is the difference between Alpha Hydroxy and Beta Hydroxy Acids?

Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) materials include glycolic and mixed fruit acid complexes specially formulated to exfoliate your skin. In addition, they promote the removal of dead surface cells and cause the skin to reproduce more quickly. As you age, skin cell regeneration slows, causing lines and wrinkles to form. These products cause skin to act "younger." This improves the appearance of wrinkles and helps prevent new lines from forming. The removal of the dead surface cells also helps prevent/eliminate breakouts, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and improve tone, texture and overall appearance. Also, Alpha Hydroxy Acids are water-soluble.

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) - i.e. salicylic acid - are fat-soluble, and are often used in skin care products to accelerate skin cell turnover and help clear oily pores. They can penetrate more deeply than AHAs and are gentler.

Do the Sense products contain gluten?

  • The Sense products are gluten-free except for the following:
As stated on their labels, both the Revitalizing Shampoo and Nourishing Conditioner contain wheat proteins, which means these products also contain gluten.
  • The Rice Bran Polisher contains some oat ingredients. While oats do not inherently contain gluten, they may have been processed on equipment that also processes wheat, barley, and rye, meaning that a small amount of gluten may be present in the product.

Are the Sense products natural?

Although the Sense products have many extracts and ingredients from plants, herbs, and other natural sources, it would certainly not be accurate to describe them as "natural" products. In fact, there is really nothing "all-natural" about any product (including personal care or cosmetics) that is processed and put into a bottle. The term "natural" is constantly overused in marketing literature.

The names of the ingredients in the Sense products sound chemical because they are just that: chemicals. But, when you think about it, isn't everything a chemical? The air we breathe and the water we drink are chemicals. Our bodies are giant, complex collections of chemicals. Vitamins are chemicals. Everything in this world could be described by the chemicals that comprise it.

Obviously, the complexity of a name does not indicate the safety or origin of the chemical. If we were to use the actual chemical names for the vitamins they would sound very complex and "industrial" (i.e. 2-methyl-3-phytyl-1,4-naphthoquinone instead of "vitamin K"). The same goes for chemicals that comprise our bodies (i.e. (8S,9S,13S,14S,17S)-13-methyl-6,7,8,9,11,12,14,15,16,17-decahydrocyclopenta[a]phenanthrene-3,17-diol instead of "estrogen").

The bottom line is that the ingredients used in Sense products have a purpose and are compounds known to be safe and effective when used appropriately, regardless of how complex or "chemical" their names may sound.

Why does the Daytime Protective Emulsion not list SPF 15 on the bottle?

Unlike products classified as cosmetics, sunscreens are regulated as over-the-counter (OTC) drugs by the FDA. For regulatory reasons, USANA has decided to move away from listing Daytime Protective Emulsion as a drug, which means we have gone from a drug formula to a cosmetic formula and have removed the SPF rating on the product.

The cosmetic formula will replenish your skin's essential moisture and help reduce the effects of daily exposure to the environment with Regenisomes and the antioxidant complexes Proteo-C and Proflavanol-T.

If you plan to spend a great deal of time outdoors, you may want to use a separate sunscreen product.

Do any of the Sense products contain fragrance?

Yes, the Sense products have always contained fragrance. Fragrance is an integral part of the success of personal care products, and even products that claim to be "fragrance free" are not necessarily void of fragrance ingredients. The FDA has made the following regulation regarding this claim-

"Fragrance Free: implies that a cosmetic product so labeled has no perceptible odor. Fragrance ingredients may be added to a fragrance-free cosmetic to mask any offensive odor originating from the raw materials used, but in a smaller amount than is needed to impart a noticeable scent."

In summer 2007, the Sense fragrance was updated to provide a more universal appeal.

However, in December 2007 it was announced that after working closely with the Independent Distributor Council, USANA will return to using the original, light botanical aroma in the Sense products.
